          A  spelling bee  is a competition where participants  are asked to spell a broad selection of words  , usually with a varyring degree of difficulty .  These contests are popular in many English speaking countries and are often organized at schools , colleges , regional , national and even International levels . The primary aim of Spelling Bee   is to encourage children and young adults to develop strong spelling skills ,  expand their vocabulary and foster  a love for the English language . The original of the term  “ Spelling Bee “  can be traced back to the 19th century  in the United States .. The word  “ Bee “  in this context refers  to a  “ quilting bee “ or  a “ sewing bee “ . Over time , spelling competitions became regular  feature in American schools culminating  in the formation of national level contests .The Scripps  National Spelling Bee , held annually in the US since 1925 is the most famous and prestigious spelling bee in the world .

In a typical Spelling Bee  , the  participants are given a word by a  judge or a moderator and they must pronounce the word , spell it aloud correctly  , and then say it again to complete their turn .Contestants may  ask  for  the definition ,  language of origin ,  part of speech and even request the word to be used in a sentence to help them understand it better .If a  participant spells  the word correctly they move on to the next round  ; an incorrect spelling usually leads to elimination ,  depending on the rules of the particular competition .
